A suspect faces attempted first-degree murder charges after a person was shot at a residence on Chad Drive Southeast, Sunday, Aug. 14.

Yelm Police Sgt. Kevin Taylor said that he and another YPD officer were responding to a possible order violation Sunday evening at the residence when dispatch notified them that a man was trying to force entry into the Cherry Meadows home.

“While we were still en route, dispatch could hear someone yell that he had a gun. Then they heard possible gunshots. When we arrived on scene, we saw a male in the driveway. We confronted him in the driveway and detained him without incident,” Taylor said on July 15. “We initially got there, and the suspect was in the driveway. He initially didn’t really listen to our commands, and tried to go back into the house but eventually we were able to detain him.”

During a search of the house, Taylor said a single male victim was found with a gunshot wound upstairs in the shower. He added that once aid originally arrived at the location and secured the victim outside of the house, personnel planned to airlift him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, however the emergency airlift had an extended estimated time of arrival.

“It was quicker for them to ground transport him to Madigan, and that’s what they did,” Taylor said. “He initially got transported to Madigan, and once he got stable enough, he was transported to Harborview in stable condition. We’ll do a follow up with Harborview today, and this is essentially the initial phase of the investigation. We have more to do.”

Taylor added that there’s no threat to the safety of the public, and that the suspect was actually “very cooperative with us after the fact.” In addition to attempted first-degree murder charges, he faces two counts of assault 2-domestic violence.

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the arrest.
