As Yelm Community Schools continues to find ways to address its bus driver shortage and bus cancellations, the district has hired a new transportation director. The school board unanimously voted to hire Jeffrey Adams to oversee the transportation department, and he began his new job on Thursday, Nov. 16.

According to YCS Superintendent Chris Woods, the school board approved Adams because of his “ability to bring people together and be a part of a team,” as well as the “positive energy he will bring.”

“He will be instrumental in helping us overcome our challenges,” Woods said at the school board’s Nov. 21 meeting.

At the Oct. 26 school board meeting, Woods said three finalists were considered for the transportation director position.

The district is looking to hire bus drivers as well, as it is short two to three bus drivers per day, according to YCS Communications Director Teri Melone. The staff shortage has caused numerous bus routes to be canceled, delayed, rerouted or split.
