Roy resident dies after being struck by semi on Highway 702

A Roy woman died after being struck by a semi-truck on state Route 702 near 40th Avenue South, last week.

Dae S. Hwang, a 79-year-old Roy resident, died on Thursday, July 18, after being struck at around 7:20 a.m., according to Washington State Patrol (WSP).

According to the WSP news release, Hwang was deceased when first responders arrived at the scene. The release stated Hwang was walking in an unknown direction on the eastbound shoulder at 40th Avenue South and was struck by the semi-truck, driven by Adam Sumers-Johnson, of Rainier, after Hwang attempted to cross.



WSP reported that alcohol and drugs were not involved or a factor in the wreck, and that Sumers-Johnson was wearing a seatbelt during the incident.

The collision caused a portion of Highway 702 to be closed for three hours and 20 minutes.
