Man Arrested for Homicide at Maytown Rest Area

An argument between two pedestrians in the parking lot of the Maytown Rest Area on Tuesday escalated into homicide when one subject shot and killed the other. 

Washington State Patrol troopers were dispatched to the rest area, located off southbound Interstate 5 milepost 93, at 4:21 p.m. on May 30, according to a news release from the agency. 

The rest area was closed for five hours and 30 minutes after the incident was reported. 

The victim, a 62-year-old man from Schaumburg, Illinois, was declared dead at the scene. Authorities had not released his name as of Wednesday afternoon. 



The suspected shooter, identified as Daniel Martinez, 31, of Olympia, has been arrested and booked into the Thurston County Jail for second-degree murder, according to the Washington State Patrol. 

“As it is early in the investigation, details are limited,” the state patrol stated in a news release about the incident.
