Two Yelm High School student athletes and two Yelm sports moments were nominated for awards in the seventh annual Thurston County Sports Awards, hosted by the Olympia & Beyond Sports Commission.
Samantha Blank, a senior wrestler and powerlifter, was nominated for girls high school Sports Star of the Year, while Mason Embrey, a senior football player and powerlifter, is up for the same honor on the boy’s side.
The Yelm High School boys powerlifting team was also nominated for Sports Moment of the Year after winning the state championship on May 4, and the Prairie Days Charity Mushball Tournament, held on June 23, was nominated in the same category.
The 2024 awards ceremony, which will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at South Puget Sound Community College, marks the fourth consecutive year in which a Yelm athlete and/or program has been nominated for an award. The YHS football team is the reigning winner of the Sports Moment of the Year after winning the state title in thrilling fashion in the fall of 2022.
