Spring sports under way in Nisqually Valley region

With just Rainier High School’s girls basketball team still competing, local baseball, softball, track, soccer and tennis programs are under way for 2024 spring athletics.

Baseball

The first baseball game within the Nisqually Valley region is set for 4 p.m., Friday, March 8, when the Yelm Tornados host the Lakes Lancers in 3A non-conference action. The contest marks new head coach Dakota Hill’s first contest at the program’s helm.

Rainier baseball kicks off its season on Wednesday, March 13, hosting conference opponent Morton-White Pass at 4 p.m. They’ll conclude the season series against MWP on Thursday, March 14 at Morton High School. 

Softball

Yelm High School’s softball program begins the season with three consecutive home games, including a non-conference matchup with the Olympia Bears, 4A SPSL, at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12.

Rainier High School’s softball program begins its season with two consecutive home games. The first of the season is set for 4 p.m., Monday, March 11, against the Cascade Christian Cougars. The team is then set to host Mossy Rock on Tuesday, March 12. Both games start at 4 p.m. 



Track

Yelm’s first track event of the year is set for Wednesday, March 13, in the Olympia Jamboree. Events will begin at 4 p.m. Then, on Wednesday, March 20, the North Thurston Rams will host Yelm and Capital in a SSC meet.

Rainier’s first track event of the year is scheduled for Thursday, March 14 in the 1B/2B/1A league meet at Morton-White Pass. The team will also host the “Rainier Icebreaker” on Saturday, March 16, at Rainier High School. 

Other sports

Yelm boys and girls golf will open its season on Wednesday, March 14, when the teams host Gig Harbor High School at the Tahoma Valley Golf Course in Yelm. The boys will begin at 2:45 p.m., while the girls will tee off at 3:15 p.m. 

Yelm’s boys varsity soccer program begins its season at home on Tuesday, March 14, against the 4A SPSL Graham-Kapowsin Eagles. The contest against the Tornados’ future 4A conference opponents will begin at 7 p.m.
