Local cowboys and cowgirls compete in annual June Roy Pioneer Rodeo

Numerous local cowboys and cowgirls gathered on Huggins Greig Road for the annual spring Roy Pioneer Rodeo on Saturday, June 1, and Sunday, June 2. Several local competitors tried their luck in different rodeo competitions at the big event.

According to nprarodeo.com results, Kyle Bounds of Harrisburg took first place in the bareback riding competition with a score of 80, earning $611.82. Tyrel Holmes of Spray, Oregon, took second in the competition with a score of 74 to earn $453. He tied with Cooper Cano of Carlton, Oregon, who also scored 74 to earn $453.

Sammi Lane of Arlington, Washington, took first place in the barrel-racing event with a score of 17.94 to earn $1,316.29. She was followed by Peyton Sanchey of Glenwood, Washington, in second place with a score of 18.01 to earn $1,144.60. Teri Bangart of Olympia, Washington, finished in third place with a score of 18.06 to earn $972.

In the breakaway roping competition, Hermiston, Oregon’s Britni Carlson finished in first place with a score of 2.3 to earn $1,405.53. She was followed by Yelm’s Morgan Dudley, with a score of 2.8 to earn $1,222.20. Katie Shepp of Chehalis, Washington, finished in third place with a 3.0 score to earn $1,038.87. 

Tenino’s Brett Hale finished in first place in the cow-milking competition by posting a 17.8 score to earn $814. He was followed by Goldendale, Washington’s Charley Meeske, who posted a 20.5 score to earn $679. Roy’s Jesse Sleeman finished in third place with a score of 24.4 to earn $543. 

The top two competitors in the saddle bronc riding competition were Levi Hurst of Kalispell, Montana, and Chase Martin of Beavercreek, Oregon. Hurst finished in first place with a score of 80 to earn $916.65, while Martin scored 77 to earn $611.10. 



Dylan Lowery of Stanwood, Washington, earned a 5.1 score in the steer wrestling competition to win $776. He was followed by Yakima, Washington’s Tony Martinez in second place, with a score of 12.4 to earn $582. Colby Riley of Walla Walla scored 19.8 to finish in third place and earn $388. 

Marcus Marriott of Canby, Oregon, earned $1,097.07 by finishing in first place as team roping header with a 7.5 score. He was followed by Battle Ground, Washington’s Justin Farber, who finished with an 8.1 score to earn $907.92. Jordan Tye of Canby finished in third with an 8.9 score to earn $718.77. 

Mike Marriott of Canby, Oregon, earned $1,097 by finishing in first place as team roping heeler with a 7.5 score. He was followed by Houston Hull of Warden, Washington, in second place with a score of 8.1 to earn $907.92. Andy Carlson of Hermiston, Oregon, scored an 8.9 to finish third and earn $718.77. 

Preston Pederson of Hermiston, Oregon, scored a 9.7 in the tie-down roping competition to win first place and earn $1,012.68. He was followed by Kass Kayser of Ellensburg, Washington, in second place with a score of 11 to earn $838.08. Kass Kimble of Moses Lake, Washington, finished in third place with a score of 11.2 to earn $663.48. 

Locally, Beckett Stock of Roy, competed in the barrel-racing competition and scored 18.1 to earn $629.53. Tenino, Washington’s Riata Hale scored a 4.0 in the breakaway roping competition to earn $305.55. Yelm’s Spencer Carlson scored 27.5 in the steer wrestling event to earn $194. Eatonville, Washington’s Colby Wood scored a 10.10 as team roping header to bring home $340.47.
