Yelm swept by Emerald Ridge in SPSL opener

The Yelm volleyball team received what head coach Bailey Whalen described as a “wake-up call” about the caliber of the 4A South Puget Sound League Monday night.

Yelm opened its league schedule with a 3-0 home loss to Emerald Ridge 25-15, 25-13, 25-15. The Jaguars return the majority of their core that placed seventh at the 4A state tournament and finished 11-1 in the league last season.

“We passed really well and made fewer errors after our first set, but Emerald Ridge is a tough team,” Whalen said. “It was a great wake-up call that our league is one of the toughest for volleyball in the state, especially the west side.”

Anna Lee and Lexi Stone each recorded five kills, while Lee, Riley Smith and Kinsley Corak each passed above a 2.00 in serve receive.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Tornados (0-5, 0-1 SPSL), as they’ll welcome Bethel (3-1, 0-1 SPSL) Wednesday night.
