Yelm Girls Bounce Back, Boys Drop Consecutive Games

The Lady Tornados rode a hot streak after losing to Bonney Lake to start the season. After five straight wins, the ladies dropped back to back games against North Thurston, and 3A state championship contender Gig Harbor.

In the consecutive losses, the ladies experienced some offensive troubles averaging 42 points in defeat. In their three losses this season, the struggles seemed to point to the offense. But when the girls are clicking, they are hard to stop.

In their match-up with Gig Harbor on Wednesday, Jan. 12, the Tornados’ offense sputtered. The girls were unable to keep up with Gig Harbor’s pace, and fell 70-44. Gig Harbor, who sits atop the standings in the South Sound Conference, moved to 7-1 with the victory against Yelm.

The ladies bounced back well after two consecutive losses in their closest game of the season. During a game against the Central Kitsap Cougars on Jan. 14, the ladies led at halftime, 29-28. The Lady Tornados tried to pull away in the third quarter and ended with a lead of 47-40.

Central Kitsap then went on an 8-0 run, taking the lead 48-47. In the final three minutes of the fourth quarter, the two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game.

After a timeout with less than a minute to go, the Tornados led 53-52. The girls were able to close out the game, despite a valiant effort by Central Kitsap. Yelm won 58-55, and improved to 6-3 (6-2 in SSC competition).

Meanwhile, heading into weekly competition, the Tornado boys basketball team built momentum after winning two consecutive games against River Ridge and North Thurston.

It was then time for the Tornados to face their biggest challenge yet.

On Wednesday, Jan. 12, the boys hosted SSC contender Gig Harbor.

After experiencing troubles early in the season, the Tornados hoped to defeat the league’s best, but Yelm was defeated by the Tides, 60-35.

Scoring for Yelm was Trevontay Smith with 18 points and Marius Aalona with 14.

The boys then played at home against Central Kitsap on Jan. 14.

It seemed like the boys were able to take away a couple of learning points from the loss against Gig Harbor. The offense was flowing, and once again, Smith could not be stopped.

The boys wound up losing the game 62-61 after a contest that was back and forth the entire time.

Scoring for Yelm was Smith with 32 points, Alex Segarra with 11 and Aalona added 10.

Much like the ladies, the boys were able to provide fans with some fourth quarter excitement, despite the loss.

The boys traveled to second place Timberline on Jan. 19 in an SSC matchup before coming home to host Capital on Jan. 21.

For the ladies, they traveled to Black Hills for a non-conference matchup on Monday, Jan. 17.

Following the non-conference matchup, the ladies hosted Timberline on Wednesday, Jan. 19. They are scheduled to play Capital on Friday, Jan. 21.
