Yelm football picks up first SPSL victory of season, defeats Bonney Lake 16-6

For the first time since the team’s week three matchup against Life Christian Academy on Friday, Sept. 19, Yelm High School’s football team found itself victorious after defeating South Puget Sound League (SPSL) opponent Bonney Lake 16-6 on Friday, Oct. 10.

The Tornados found the endzone in the first quarter when senior quarterback Owen Sletten followed his big offensive linemen on a sneak play for a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Following a successful extra point attempt from senior kicker Sterling Temple, Yelm led Bonney Lake 7-0.

Yelm found the endzone again for the second and final time in the second quarter after senior running back Hunter Owens paved his way forward for a 4-yard rushing touchdown. After Temple missed his PAT attempt, the Tornados led 13-0.

After halftime, Bonney Lake’s offense was able to score its only points of the game following a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Senior defensive back Jordan Swain blocked the Panthers’ extra point attempt, and the Tornados led 13-6.




Yelm was able to seal its victory in the fourth quarter, following a successful 18-yard field goal try from Temple.

Ultimately, the Tornados defeated the Panthers, 16-6.

The Tornados move to 2-4, 1-2 in the SPSL, while the Panthers remain winless at 0-6.
