The Mount Tahoma Thunderbirds defeated the Yelm Tornados in a statement 42-0 shutout victory in the first game of the high school football season for either team on Friday, Sept. 5, at Mount Tahoma High School.

Despite an opening drive interception from the Tornados defense — which gave the team possession in the red zone for Yelm’s opening drive — the offense could not capitalize. A quick three-and-out led the Tornados field goal unit onto the field; however, the Thunderbirds blocked the kick and quickly gave its offense the possession back.

Mount Tahoma managed to score twice in the first quarter — once offensively on a 37-yard touchdown pass, and once defensively on a 24-yard pick six — and found the endzone twice in the second quarter on rushing touchdowns of 20 yards and 1 yard.

Though the Thunderbirds didn’t score in the third quarter, they found the endzone twice in the final 12 minutes of the game through a one-yard rushing touchdown and a 12-yard passing touchdown.

Ultimately, the Thunderbirds defeated the Tornados 42-0.
