Family Storytime

Join the Yelm Timberland Library from 10:30 to 11 a.m. every Thursday for family storytime. The event includes music, movement, books and activities for the whole family. Children must be accompanied by a participating adult. The library is at 210 Prairie Park St. NE in Yelm.

Friday, Dec. 8

Holiday Tree Lighting

The annual City of Roy Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Roy Community Center, 122 Third St. E. The tree outside Roy City Hall will be lit around 7 p.m. There will be treats, refreshments and the opportunity to get a photo with Santa Claus. Business owners who would like their business to participate should email Michael Malek at RoyCityHall@CityOfRoyWA.US.

Saturday, Dec. 9

Yelm Cinemas Toy Drive

Yelm Cinemas is hosting its annual toy drive on Saturday, Dec. 9 and is hosting a free movie to celebrate. The movie theater asks for a toy or art supply donation to donate to Yelm Community Services to give to youth within the community. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and a screening of “The Polar Express” will be shown at 10 a.m.

12th annual Lions Club Christmas Store

The Yelm Lions Club invites the public to its cabin across from Yelm Middle School on Saturday, Dec. 9 for its annual Christmas Store. Kids under 12 are free to select a gift for each adult in the household, while the entire family can enjoy a free pancake breakfast. The event will last from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

SRO Radio Show presents ‘It’s a Wonderful Life

The SRO Radio Show Players return for two showings, 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Outpost Church in Yelm as the group presents the “It’s a Wonderful Life” radio show. The movie has been recreated into a “radio show” that will be brought to life with Foley Artists creating the sound effects. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased on srotheater.org.

Yelm Boys Basketball hosts Bonney Lake

Yelm boys basketball will host its first game of the season against the Pierce County League’s Bonney Lake Panthers. The contest will begin at 7 p.m. inside Yelm High School’s gymnasium.

27th Annual Yelm Community Christmas Concert

The 27th Annual Yelm Community Christmas Concert will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10423 Clark Road SE, Yelm. This annual event is free to the public and all are invited.  Choirs from local community groups and churches will gather to share songs of the season and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ through music. The event will feature musical performances from various faiths and local organizations, along with a military tribute.

Bigelow House Museum Tour

The Bigelow House Museum offers regular escorted tours on the first and second Sunday of the month at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Entrance fees are $5 per adult, $4 for seniors and students, and $2 for children. The museum is located at 918 Glass Ave. NE in Olympia.

Morning with Mrs. Claus

Yelm Parks and Recreation Department will host Mrs. Claus from 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, as she leads a craft exercise, story time and cookie decorating. Cookies for Santa

The Roy Grange invites the community to come out to its location on Water Street for its second annual Cookies for Santa Event. Participants are invited to bake cookies for Santa himself and can enjoy holiday movies in the facilities TV area. The event will last from 12:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. People can bring their cameras and take selfies with Santa and his trusty elves.

Winter Solstice Walk

The City of Yelm Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the annual Winter Solstice Walk from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21 at Cochrane Memorial Park, 10236 Mill Road SE. The department invites participants to walk throughout the candlelit Cochrane Park to celebrate the shortest day of the year. At the end of the walk, participants can enjoy a cup of warm apple cider.

Coach Strand’s Final Home Wrestling Dual

Yelm’s wrestling program invites the community to celebrate legendary head wrestling coach Gaylord Strand as he coaches his final home dual as the program’s head coach. This season marks Strand’s 50th year as the Tornados head coach. The event is set to begin at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, as Yelm will wrestle the Bethel Bison. At the conclusion of the dual, community members can join former wrestlers, coaches and current athletes in celebrating Strand’s career with speakers, presents and food.
