We Love Rainier WA, a local community enrichment group that aims to “make Rainier shine even brighter,” continued to give back to the town last month as two volunteers with the group delivered over $800 in school supplies to Rainier Elementary.
Last month, We Love Rainier WA members Victoria Cooper and Laura Immal delivered the school supplies as part of the organization’s “SMART” program, which stands for supplies, materials and resources for teachers.
George Johnson, a We Love Rainier WA member, told the Nisqually Valley News that the SMART program provides school supplies each year to elementary school teachers and students in Rainier. The organization began this program several years back, Johnson said.
The group began asking teachers what additional school supplies they needed in the second half of the school year in order to continue providing local students with the best possible education.
The SMART program is one of many education enhancing supply drives put on by We Love Rainier WA, as the group gives back to elementary students each year in its “Dictionaries to Third Graders” program at Rainier Elementary and Eagle View Christian School on Morris Road Southeast in Yelm. Johnson said the organization has also provided other needed supplies to both Rainier Elementary and Head Start, also located in Rainier.
The local group also sponsors many family oriented events such as Easter Egg hunts, trunk-or-treat gatherings and a Christmas tree lighting. While in the festive spirit, We Love Rainier WA also decorates Rainier during the Christmas season.
“To quote Gary Edwards, children are only 35% of our population, but they are 100% of our future,” Johnson wrote in a news release.
