Nearly 50 people flocked to the Roy Historical Cemetery to pay a special tribute to fallen veterans Saturday, Dec. 14.

As part of the cemetery’s partnership with Wreaths Across America, volunteers placed wreaths on 150 headstones of servicemembers laid to rest throughout the site. Volunteers in attendance included Pierce County Councilor Amy Cruver, who helped advertise the event, and Roy City Councilor Edmund Dunn.

The event began with cemetery owner Beth King paying tribute to fallen veterans with a moment of silence before volunteers hung one wreath for every branch of the military. Participants were then dispersed to place wreaths in front of every headstone for each known veteran.

Over a 13-day span in January, the cemetery, which opened in 1890, collected a total of 151 wreaths after setting a goal of 160. For each wreath sponsored by a community member, Wreaths Across America matched it.

The wreaths, which are cut from a forest in Massachusetts, will decorate the headstones for three to four weeks. Roy’s partnership with Wreaths Across America will be an annual event, and next year’s National Wreaths Across America Day will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025.
