Curtis High School clinched its spot in the 4A postseason on the road with a 37-7 victory over Yelm High School on Thursday, Oct. 30, in a crossover matchup between the South Puget Sound League (SPSL) North’s Vikings and the SPSL South’s Tornados.

The Vikings scored the first touchdown of the contest in the first quarter when running back Ryland Geldermann punched a 3-yard run into the endzone.

It didn’t take long for the Tornados to match their opponent’s score, as senior wide receiver Jacob Ford took a screen pass for 76 yards and a touchdown. Following a successful PAT from senior kicker Sterling Temple, the score was tied at seven.

From there, the contest was all Curtis. The Vikings kicked a 28-yard field goal to extend their lead to 10-7 in the first quarter, before punching in another 3-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter — making the score 17-7 in favor of Curtis.

The final score of the first half was another successful Vikings field goal try, this time from 35 yards out. At halftime, Curtis led Yelm 20-7.

Geldermann found the endzone again during the third quarter for a 1-yard touchdown to extend his team’s lead to 27-7. The Vikings’ final touchdown of the game was a 30-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Late in the third quarter, Curtis was also successful on its third field goal try of the game — creating a final score of 37-7 in favor of the Vikings.
