After 90 years of serving the Thurston County area, United Way of Thurston County will close its doors at the end of the month.

The nonprofit announced the impending closure on Tuesday, March 3.

“This decision was made with thoughtful care and a deep commitment to stewardship,” United Way of Thurston County said in a social media post. “We are profoundly grateful for every donor, volunteer, partner, and staff member who made this work possible.”

The chapter’s board of directors decided to dissolve operations after “thoughtful review and careful financial analysis,” according to United Way of Thurston County’s website.

The board determined that shutting down was “the most responsible path forward,” United Way of Thurston County states. “This decision ensures we can honor commitments, steward remaining funds with integrity, and allow aligned community partners to continue critical work in Thurston County.”

United Way of Thurston County is honoring all current commitments and is working with community partners to “ensure a smooth transition for program participants,” the organization stated.

Programs run or supported by United Way of Thurston County include the Education to Financial Stability Task Force, the Career and Resource Navigator Program, the Residential Construction Academy, the Emergency Assistance Fund for local food banks, and more.

All funds raised through March 15 will go to the Residential Construction Academy at South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) to support current program commitments.

The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound and the SPSCC Foundation will manage any remaining United Way of Thurston County funds.

“These funds will continue to support aligned education and workforce efforts in Thurston County,” United Way of Thurston County stated.
