Tornados Volleyball Drops Close Matchup With River Ridge

The Yelm volleyball program is still searching for its first South Sound Conference win after they lost in five sets to the River Ridge Hawks in a close matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

At their home court, the Tornados were able to take the first set by a score of 25-20.

In the second set of the evening, both teams kept the score close but River Ridge came out on top with a 28-26 set.

Tied at 1-1 as they entered the third set, the Tornados started to play dominant volleyball. They were able to keep River Ridge’s defense at bay, securing a 25-16 set win.

River Ridge was able to win the fourth set, 25-18, behind strong defense and opportunistic offense.

In the fifth set, the team had to secure 15 points to secure the win. The Tornados were able to keep it close throughout the set, but ultimately came up just short, losing 15-12.



Yelm now sits at 2-7 on the season outside of tournament play. With six games remaining, they’ll continue to search for their first South Sound Conference win.

Senior Nolah Wofford led the Tornados with eight kills, followed by junior Samantha Burian and sophomore Layah Hicks, each with six kills. Wofford also led the Tornados in total blocks with four in all.

Hicks led Yelm with 26 digs, followed by Burian with 13 and junior Ayla Ackerman with 10.

The Tornados were set to travel to Gig Harbor on Tuesday, Oct. 18 for a matchup with the Tides. Prior to the game, Gig Harbor was currently in third in the South Sound Conference standings, with an SSC record of 5-2.

Following their matchup with Gig Harbor, the Tornados will return home on Thursday, Oct. 20 for a matchup with South Sound Conference rivals, the Timberline Blazers. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.
