The Tenino boys basketball team seems to be finding its groove at the perfect time, as the Beavers won their second league game in a row on Friday over Hoquiam.
Tenino’s offense scored 34 points in the first half while turning it over just two times, and the Beavers took an 11-point lead into the locker room. Jack Burkhardt and Austin Gonia both had dunks in the first half to spark the offense.
“We executed really well,” Tenino coach Ryan Robertson said. “And we took really good care of the ball.”
The third quarter was more of a defensive battle, but Hoquiam’s Lincoln Niemi was doing what he could to keep the Grizzlies in the game. He scored all eight of Hoquiam’s points in the third, but Gonia held him to just two points in the fourth.
With Gonia covering Niemi and Feltus shadowing the point guard, Tenino allowed just 18 points in the second half.
“Our pressure defense really did good things for us,” Robertson said.
Jack Burkhardt had one of his best games of the season, scoring 19 points in the interior. Gonia was right behind him with 18 points, and Feltus added 14. Michael Vassar and Jeremiah McKauge combined for the other six.
Tenino (4-11, 2-1 1A Evergreen) will look to make it three in a row on Wednesday at home against Rochester.
