A Look Back at This Week, 45 Years Ago

- Yelm High School celebrated 93 graduating seniors in 1977 at the commencement ceremony in the Yelm High School gymnasium. The 1977 valedictorian was Lori Larsen, who graduated with a 3.98 GPA.

- A 32-year-old Yelm citizen died in a car accident on Sunday, June 5, 1977. The resident had purchased a 1976 foreign-made vehicle before he died in the accident. 

- Roy resident Gerald Hust graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in June of 1977. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant after his graduation.

- Yelm High School senior Patsy Walker won the national AAU Junior Women’s Pentathlon title in Wilberforce, Ohio on Sunday, June 5, 1977. She accumulated a total of 4,103 points at the competition.

- The 1977 Prairie Days princesses were announced on Monday, June 6, 1977. Those selected included Trina Noffsinger, Lorie Reichel, Debbie Health and Cheryl Henderson.

A Look Back at This Week, 35 Years Ago

- Lisa Cebula, a 5 foot, 9 inch, Yelm High School power forward, signed to play college basketball for Saint Martin’s University in Lacey in June of 1987. The senior averaged 7.1 points, five rebounds and four assists per game.

- Two Yelm residents graduated from Saint Martin’s University in 1987. They included Yelm High School graduates Scott Demeyer and Todd Stark.

- St. Peter Hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary on June 14, 1987, where many Yelm residents were born. The event was held from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

- Rainier students held a celebration of life ceremony in the school library for their teacher Susan Brunell, who died in 1987. She taught at Rainier from 1978 to 1985 before losing her battle with cancer.

- Thirty-five senior citizens from the Yelm Senior Center partook in an extensive tour of Wilcox Farms in Roy in 1987. Those in attendance were treated to lunch after the event.



A Look Back at This Week, 25 Years Ago

- Yelm High School bid farewell to 179 graduating seniors in June of 1997. The graduation celebration was held at Yelm High School and hosted by Principal Gary Martin.

- Several Yelm residents complained to the city after they noticed misleading signs in the area in 1997. A motorist noticed a sign labeled “Bald Creek Road,” but was led to a different destination.

- An Austrian court ruled in favor of JZ Knight in 1997 after an Austrian brought the Yelm woman to court, claiming she was the original person to channel Ramtha.

- Yelm Mayor Kathy Wolf served on the 1997 Heart Walk committee, which was sponsored by the American Heart Association. The event was held at Capitol Lake in Olympia.

- Boy Scout Troop 268 held a rummage sale and car wash on June 13 and June 14, 1997. The event was held at the Carlson Cabin across the street from Yelm Middle School.

A Look Back at This Week, 15 Years Ago

- The 47th annual Roy Rodeo was held on Saturday, June 2 in 2007. Announcer Cody Hodge claimed the Roy Rodeo was the premiere rodeo in the Northwest.

- Two black bears were spotted in Yelm near Highway 507 and George Road in 2007. One of the bears was shot, while the other roamed free.

- Peggy Wolf-Kennedy was appointed to Yelm’s Planning Commission in late May of 2007. The lifelong resident of the city was thankful to have the opportunity to bring her vision to the table.

- Stormwater tax hearings were slated for Wednesday, June 13, 2007. The meetings were held in regards to a possible expansion of the storm water utility.

- More than 70 Yelm High School FFA members took part in the FFA state convention at Washington State University in Pullman. The convention was held from May 9 to May 13 in 2007.
