Theft shoplifting at Walmart leads to arrest

Yelm police officers responded to theft at the Walmart around 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16.

According to police reports, officers entered the building and observed a female suspect seated on a bench inside the office. The suspect stated she knew that it was “not right or ethical to steal, but sometimes you have to do things for your children.”

After that statement, police officers observed the large number of items she’d stolen, valued at more than $750.

The woman is homeless, according to reports, and wanted to get her daughter Christmas gifts before she left the state.

After speaking with both involved parties, police officers arrested the woman for theft in the second degree due to the total value being over $750.

After searching the woman’s purse, police officers observed additional stolen merchandise and small baggies with a crystal white substance that appeared to be methamphetamine. The woman later admitted the substance was meth. The additional stolen merchandise added up to $68.80, bringing the value of stolen items to $825.17.

The woman was taken to the Nisqually Jail.

Drug violation near 600 block in Yelm

Around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, near the 600 block of Yelm Avenue East, Yelm police officers observed a red sedan stopped on the side of the road, blocking the bike lane. Near the vehicle was a male, looking under the hood, and a female standing outside the passenger side.

Eventually the woman headed north away from the vehicle and was not located at the time of the report.

The police officer approached the male and introduced himself, and the male stated his vehicle broke down and asked for a jump start. After assisting the driver to move the vehicle off the road, the police officer ran a records check and learned the male had warrants out for his arrest.

After searching the man, officers found multiple weapons including a baton and a pocket knife; both were retrieved. During the search of the person, officers also found a bag of white powdery substance, which the man later admitted was fentanyl.

The man was issued a criminal citation for known possession of a controlled substance, and a court date was set.
