The Yelm Chamber of Commerce has opened registration for its 2023 Prairie Days Parade, which is scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. on June 24.
The parade has been a Yelm tradition for decades.
“This year’s Prairie Days Parade is going to be a really fun, family-oriented event,” said Amanda Muñoz, the director of the Yelm Chamber of Commerce. “The parade leads into a really big day of activities at the park for families to do, too.”
This year’s parade is a tribute to heroes, which Muñoz said can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Muñoz said some people might want to honor their favorite comic book superhero, while others may honor a parent, sibling or family member who has made a difference in their lives.
“Be sure to individually honor your heroes and let those close to you know that they are your heroes,” Muñoz said. “We have a lot of amazing individuals in our community who could be called a hero and it’s important for them to be recognized.”
Following the parade, Muñoz said there will be fun activities planned at Yelm City Park.
Line Roy, with the City of Yelm’s Parks and Recreations department, said there will be a plethora of events, which include games such as potato sack races, watermelon eating contests and yard-pong.
“After the parade, we’ll have old-fashioned fair-style games. We’re counting on the businesses and nonprofits to register to do those fun events,” Roy said. “There’s going to be lots of family-friendly fun. If an organization wants to sign up, registration is posted on the City of Yelm’s website.”
Those interested in having a float or section in the parade can find the registration link on the Yelm Chamber of Commerce’s website at yelmchamber.com under the calendar section.
People can also access the registration form on the chamber’s Facebook page or by picking up a copy at the chamber at 138 Prairie Park Lane SE in Yelm.
Once the registration form is filled out, people can bring it into the chamber office, email it to info@yelmchamber.com, or mail it to P.O. Box 444, Yelm, Washington, 98597.
