The registration period for five fall sports at Yelm High School is now open.
Athletic Director Rob Hill encourages all athletes to register prior to the first day of practices.
The fall sports season for Yelm Community Schools starts on Aug. 23 and lasts through Nov. 13, although some programs may start practices before the Aug. 23 date.
The five sports for the upcoming fall season include football, girls volleyball, girls soccer, boys tennis and cross country.
The Yelm High School football team is coming off of a 10-1 season that included a trip to the state quarterfinals, and a perfect record in the South Sound Conference.
On Friday, Sept. 2, the Tornados will kick off their season against Camas, followed up with a trip to McKenzie Stadium in Vancouver to face Union High School. Each opponent is a member of the 4A Greater St. Helens league.
The ladies volleyball team looks to build off its momentum from last season, which included a brief stint into the postseason. Their season ended with a 3-0 loss to Bainbridge High School on Nov. 9.
This season, the ladies have a pair of non-conference matchups before they dive into SSC play. On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the girls will take a brief bus ride to Rainier High School to take on the Mountaineers in their season opener. After the first season matchup, the ladies will play Federal Way High School before they enter SSC play.
As for Yelm’s cross country team, Hill said the program “is returning a very strong crew.” Hill said the team needs more girls to join for the fall season. The cross country team will participate in its first meet of the season on Sept. 7 at Wonderwood Park in Lacey, which will be followed by the Olympia Cross Country Invite.
The boys tennis team is set to start its 2022 season on Monday, Sept. 5, as they host its SSC foe Gig Harbor. Then on Wednesday, Sept. 7 the Tornados will travel to Timberline High School for another SSC matchup, before returning home two days later on Sept. 9 to host Peninsula. Hill said the tennis team made it to the state tournament in the spring, and noted the shape of the tennis program is strong.
The girls soccer team looks to build off of its 2021 season which saw the ladies go 6-10 in their matchups. The ladies kick their season off on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at home against Graham Kapowsin High School. Graham Kapowsin is a member of the 4A South Puget Sound league. Then on Thursday, Sept. 8, the ladies will dive into league play against Gig Harbor High School at home as well.
