It was a busy week for Rainier High School athletics. The boys and girls track teams began their seasons at Chief Leschi on March 18, before hosting the Ice Breaker Invitational on Saturday, March 22, while the boys and girls golf teams teed off at Newaukum Golf Course on March 18. Both the baseball and softball teams weathered through more early-season rainouts, and each captured their first wins of the season.
Rainier High School baseball wins against Toutle Lake
After losing their home opener to Mossyrock 8-2 on March 14, the Rainier High School baseball team earned its first win of the young season with a 5-3 home victory against conference opponent Toutle Lake. Down 2-0 in the sixth inning, the Mountaineers unloaded five runs, led by Blake Fennel’s two-run double. Wyatt McIntyre added an RBI single to pad Rainier’s lead going into the seventh. Senior ace Hunter Howell pitched a complete game for the Mountaineers, giving up six hits and three earned runs, while striking out three of his 33 batters faced.
The Mountaineers (1-2) continued their rain-shuffled schedule with a doubleheader at Adna on Tuesday, March 25. Results were unavailable before press time. They play again at Toutle Lake on March 27 and at Napavine on March 28. Games, dates and times are subject to change.
Rainier High School softball explodes on offense in win over Tenino
The Rainier High School softball team (1-2) found its bats on March 18, scoring 14 runs in as many hits on the way to a 14-1 victory at Tenino. Sophomore ace Ryleigh Cruse allowed one run off six hits, striking out seven Beaver batters in six innings. Elaina Henry notched three hits, three RBIs, and scored four runs. Cruse and Mia Naval each added three hits. Seven Rainier batters recorded hits in the game.
The Mountaineers resumed their road stretch at Napavine on Tuesday, March 25. Results were unavailable before press time. They play again at Onalaska on March 29. Games, dates and times are subject to change.
Rainier High School golf teams start season on a
winning note
The Rainier High School boys and girls golf teams began their respective seasons by placing first at Newaukum Golf Course on March 18, beating Winlock, Oakville and Mary M. Knight. For the girls, Lily Peralta finished first overall, followed by Kenzie Severin at second and Olivia Cotham-Mills at fifth. For the boys, Josh Peralta finished first overall, followed by Thomas Sprouffske at third and Riley Lynch at fifth.
Rainier High School track team shows out at the Icebreaker Invitational
The Rainier High School track team showcased its depth across 16 events at the Icebreaker Invitational on Saturday, March 22, at Rainier High School. Acacia Murphy took first in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches, while defending state champion Ella Marvin won the pole vault at 10 feet. Janess Blackburn placed first in the discus with a throw of 116 feet, 4 inches. Zander Peck won the javelin with a throw of 146 feet, one inch. Jazzlyn Shumate placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 64.32 seconds. Madison Ingram took second in the 1600 meters, while freshman Komaire Robles took third in the 3200 meters.
