Rainier Comes Back to Down MWP

With 19 assists as a team, the Rainier girls basketball team got off to a bit of a cold start before picking things up in the second quarter to defeat Morton-White Pass at home, 71-51, Tuesday night.

The Timberwolves came out of the gates firing, hitting 3-pointers and getting out into transition to take a 23-12 lead after the first break, before the Mountaineers finally settled down and clamped down defensively.

“They jumped on us and got out in transition and hit a lot of 3s,” Rainier coach Brandon Eygabroad said. “They cooled down later. We were able to lock down defensively and limit them down the stretch.”

Angelica Askey scored a game-high 25 points, Haleigh Hanson added 19, and Brooklynn Swenson scored 11 with assists being dished out left and right after the first frame, and the Mountaineers held the T-Wolves to 29 points after the 23-point first quarter the rest of the way.

“The girls played hard tonight,” Eygabroad said. “They played together. I’m looking forward to fine-tuning things before districts start.”

Rainier takes on Onalaska on the road Thursday while MWP hosts Adna in Randle.
