As July winds down, so too does summer soccer. Throughout the past two months, it has been filled with mid-week scrimmages and weekend tournaments. Teams are getting as much time on the pitch as possible before the season starts in late-August.
This weekend at Tenino and Centralia College, the best of the best from Southwest Washington will duke it out.
For the girls, Friday marks the beginning of the eighth annual Battle on the Blacktop hosted at Tenino High School. It’s a nine-team field this year with two W.F. West teams, Onalaska, Napavine, Adna, Rochester and the host Beavers make up the local contingent.
Raymond/South Bend and Shelton round out the field.
There will be two pools and every team is guaranteed five matches. Pool play matches begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The top two teams from each pool will meet in the title game on Sunday at 8 p.m.
No entrance fee for the tournament and concessions plus Kona Ice will be available for fans and families.
On the boys side, the third rendition of the Blazer Cup will feature two Centralia teams, W.F. West, Black Hills and Onalaska. Kelso, Mark Morris and R.A. Long will make the trek north for the two-day tourney that kicks off on Saturday.
Opening matches will be at 9 and 10:30 a.m.
