A two-vehicle accident on state Route 510 left one person dead and sent multiple people to the hospital on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred at around 7 a.m. near Peter Kalama Drive Southeast on westbound state Route 510 near the Red Wind Casino, according to WSP.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Robert Reyer said in a Tweet that a total of five people were taken to the hospital.

Reyer said two occupants of the car that allegedly caused the collision suffered serious injuries. He later added that one of the passengers had died.

“Tragically, the juvenile passenger in the causing vehicle was pronounced deceased,” Reyer wrote on Twitter.

“Our hearts go out to all involved in this tragic incident,” Reyer wrote.

The three people in the SUV that was struck suffered minor injuries, Reyer wrote.

Drivers were cautioned to expect delays as troopers investigated the wreck. Reyer and the Washington State Department of Transportation encouraged travelers to use Interstate 5 to avoid the closure of state Route 510.

Traffic was backed up in both directions near Lacey and through Yelm due to the closure.

State Route 510 reopened at around 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, according to WSDOT Tacoma.
