Senior Lunches

The Yelm Adult Community Center will hold its weekly lunches at 11:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Senior Services for the South Sound operates the Senior Nutrition Program, using the Yelm Senior Center’s commercial kitchen and dining room, at 16530 103rd Ave. S.E. in Yelm. Their staff prepares lunches for the Yelm, Tenino and Rochester senior centers and Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors in the area.

Food Bank

The Yelm Community Services food bank, at 624 Crystal Springs St. N.W. in Yelm, will hold a food giveaway from 1 to 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20. Clients cannot enter the building, and must wait in their vehicles. Staff will have pre-packed carts of food to hand out. To prevent health issues, the usual food sign-in procedures will not take place. Staff will ask the number of people in the family. People who come can only pick up for their own family. Please park in front of the food bank building.

Friday, Jan. 21

Storytime

The Yelm Timberland Library will hold its virtual Zoom Family Storytime at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21. Join the library’s expert storytime providers and other families live on Zoom every Friday for songs, music, movement, books and activities for the whole family. Children must be accompanied by a participating adult. Register online at events.trl.org/events/month by clicking the event to receive the Zoom link and to get weekly email reminders. Be aware that each individual storytime has a unique Zoom link. When you’re signing in for storytime, make sure you are clicking on the Zoom link for the correct date and time.

Yelm Basketball Game

The Tornados boys basketball team will host Capital High School and play the Cougars. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21 at Yelm High School at 1315 W. Yelm Ave. The Yelm junior varsity and C teams will play beforehand.

Tuesday, Jan. 25

Big Bird Rededication

The “Big Bird” Native American artwork at Yelm High School will be rededicated at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25 in a virtual ceremony. The presentation will include a tribal blessing and performance by the Nisqually Nation, as well as presentations about the restoration from the Washington State Arts Commission and the reflections on the impact made by the artist Marvin Oliver. The artwork was originally installed at Yelm High School in 1976 and relocated outside of the main building in 2006 during a remodel of the school. It became weathered and required restoration. The ceremony can be viewed online on the Facebook page “Big Bird Artwork Re-Dedication.”

Monday, Jan. 31

COVID-19 Testing

Bi-weekly COVID-19 testing will be available at the Yelm Community Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31. The testing is for symptomatic patients or close contacts. The Yelm Community Center is located at 301 Second St. S.E.

Tuesday, Feb. 15

Dollars for Scholars Meeting

The Yelm Dollars for Schools will host a meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Yelm Prairie Christian Center at 501 103rd Ave. N.E. in Yelm. Dollars for Scholars is a fundraising committee that provides graduating high school seniors with scholarship opportunities.
