Following in the footsteps of their former high school head coach and mentor, Gaylord Strand, nine former members of the YHS boys wrestling program entered the Tacoma Dome last weekend as coaches.
Members of Strand’s coaching tree, who coached inside of the Tacoma Dome for Mat Classic XXXVII last weekend, included: Marcus Turnquist and Tyler Whitworth, Tenino; Gavin Stewart, Squalicum; Marcus Crone and Aaron McBride, Oak Harbor; John Emory, Clover Park (girls); Tim Beaudin and Jacob Nolan, Yelm; and Matt Lininger, Olympia.
Emory’s girls of Clover Park (2A) earned 62.5 points inside of the Tacoma Dome during Mat Classic XXXVII, and was followed by Beaudin and Nolan’s Yelm Tornados with 59 points.
Stewart’s boys wrestling team at Squalicum High School (2A) earned 30.5 points, while Lininger’s Olympia Bears (4A) earned 26.5 points.
Lastly, Crone and McBride’s Oak Harbor Wildcats (3A) earned 21 points inside of the Tacoma Dome last weekend in the state tournament, while Turnquist and Whitworth’s Tenino Beavers (1A) earned three points.
