News in Brief: Alliance Northwest, disaster preparedness, tourism ambassador training

Alliance Northwest coming to Tacoma March 14

Alliance Northwest, the Pacific Northwest’s largest business-to-government conference, will celebrate its 38th year on Thursday, March 14. 

Hosted by the Thurston Economic Development Council (EDC), the event will feature keynote speeches from the Department of Defense Office of Small Business Programs, Washington state and U.S. Rep. Marilyn Strickland (WA-10). Attendees can also catch 12 breakout presentations by agency representatives and experts in government contracting, a trade show with more than 100 agencies and prime contractors, and 1-to-1 scheduled meetings between agencies, primes and small businesses.

Alliance Northwest will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center, 1500 Commerce St., Tacoma. Attendee registration costs $150, while 50% off discounts are available for firms certified through Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs and Washington State Office of Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises.

County chamber, Red Cross offering presentation on disaster preparedness

The Thurston County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a disaster preparedness presentation by Daniel Wirth of the American Red Cross, Feb. 14.  

The address will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Norman Worthington Center at St. Martin’s University. Wirth, who serves as the American Red Cross Northwest Region’s executive director of the South Puget Sound and Olympics chapters, will speak on the event’s topic of “the climate crisis and impacts on businesses.”



Wirth will introduce a free service in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, known as the Ready Rating Program. The program aims to empower businesses, schools and organizations to increase and improve preparedness for disasters and emergencies, according to a news release.

Ready Rating members can gain access to tools, resources and information, which allows them to evaluate and improve the ability to withstand disasters, continue operations and protect lives and property.

The American Red Cross aims to be at the forefront of supporting individuals struggling to cope after displacement due to disasters.

Experience Olympia & Beyond to host certified tourism ambassador training on Feb. 15

The official destination marketing organization of Thurston County, Experience Olympia & Beyond, will hold a certified tourism ambassador (CTA) training session on Feb. 15.

The CTA training will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15 at the Best Western Plus in Tumwater, 5188 Capitol Blvd. SE. All Thurston County residents can attend the event and must pay $45 for the nationally recognized certification prior to attending. 

The program aims to empower and uplift community residents with skills and knowledge needed to provide “exceptional service” to visitors they encounter, according to a release. Program members are also known as Thurston Tourism Ambassadors. CTA also ensures residents understand their role in increasing and improving tourism within Thurston County.
