New 4-H Club in Yelm Seeks Members

A new 4-H club in Yelm is looking for members who enjoy animals, sewing or STEM, otherwise known as science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The group, which has been named the 4-H Nerd Herd, has open leadership and general membership spots, according to a news release from the organization.

The club was brought to fruition by Justin and Lorraine Wikoff, who saw a need for a 4-H club.

While the club focuses on small mammals and poultry, it also highlights robotics, STEM, sewing and other activities.

“We wanted our own children to be involved in 4-H to help gain skills such as public speaking, leadership and teamwork but could not find a club close to home, so we decided to help build one,”  Justin Wikoff stated in the release.

4-H helps teach leadership skills and gives kids an opportunity to give back to the community.

“I really like the club because the kids run the meeting and there’s a fun craft or an animal that someone brings to show,” stated 10-year-old Elise Villacian, who is a member of the 4-H group.

During the meetings, the 4-H club has brought in chickens and rabbits, and has made crafts like ornaments. They also conduct business, vote on items and do a roll call.

The 4-H Nerd Herd meets at 2 p.m. on the first and third Saturday of the month. To get information on the meeting location, reach out through the group’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/groups/390542156550439.
