Mountaineers use quick start to top Loggers

A big first inning was all the Rainier baseball team needed to snap its six-game losing streak on Thursday, as the Mountaineers scored all five of their runs in the opening frame of a 5-0 win over Onalaska.

After the first two Mountaineers reached with back-to-back singles, Peyton Sheaffer brought home the first run of the game with an RBI single. Hunter Howell brought home another with an RBI double, and Kaymen Larman brought home two more with a two-run double.

Wyatt McIntyre drilled an RBI base hit of his own to bring home the fifth.

Hunter Howell took the run support and ran with it, allowing just five hits and striking out eight across six shutout innings.

After his rocky first, Maddox McKinley settled in nicely on the bump, as he allowed just one hit and no more runs over the next six innings.

Yazama Gurnsey came in in the bottom of the seventh to close things out for Rainier, and he worked around a two-out double from Rowdy Lyons to do just that.

Lyons drew a pair of walks in his other two plate appearances, while Cooper Lawrence collected two hits in three at-bats.

No Mountaineers collected multiple hits, but seven different batters recorded one.

Rainier (2-7, 2-7 C2BL) and Onalaska (2-4, 2-4 C2BL) will meet again on Friday in Rainier.
