Mountaineers Speed Up, Blow Out Loggers

The Rainier boys basketball only got better the longer the game went on Wednesday night at home, hammering Onalaska 72-28.

The Mountaineers led just 9-2 after an ugly first quarter, but dropped 19, 21, and 23 points in the second, third, and fourth, respectively to open up a huge lead.

“We got off to a slow start tonight, but we responded nicely in the second half with our defensive intensity,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “We really shared the ball well and made some great decisions in transition. There is a really cool energy when we compete and play together the way we did in the third and fourth quarters.”

Four Mountaineers finished in double figures, with Hunter Howell leading the way with 18, Jared Sprouffske adding 12, Jimmy Meldrum scoring 11, and Johnny Boesch putting in 10. Josh Meldrum came close to making it five with nine points of his own.

Rylan McGraw led Onalaska with nine points.

Rainier is set to host Winlock on Friday, and Onalaska will play at Wahkiakum.
