Mountaineers Send Athletes to State Track Competition

Rainier will send multiple athletes to the 2B state championships this week in Yakima after competing in the 2B District 4 championships on Friday, May 19, at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.

The Rainier boys finished second in the team standings, with Josh Meldrum taking second in the 100-meter dash (11.23) and fifth in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) to move on. Zack Hamilton got fourth in the 3200-meter in 11:03.55, and Matthew Kenney took fourth in the shot put (43 feet, 3 inches) and second in the discus (140 feet) to advance to state.

Elsewhere on the field, Zander Peck won a district title in the javelin with a 152 foot, 10 inch toss, and James Meldrum took third in the pole vault with a 10 foot, 6 inch clearance.

Chase MacFarland was a near double-winner, taking second in the long jump (19 feet, 10.5 inches) and first in the triple jump with a personal best of 43 feet, 9 inches.

The last individual Rainier state qualifier for the boys was Jayden Alegarbes, who took fourth in the triple jump (37 feet, 6.75 inches).

Rainier’s 4x100-meter relay also finished second in 46.12 with a team of Chris Grey, Josh Meldrum, Alegarbes and Kenney.



The Mountaineer girls finished just behind Onalaska in seventh, led by Acacia Murphy’s triple-qualification day. Murphy won the 100-meter dash in 12.98, took second in the 200-meter in 27.40, and first in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches).

Haleigh Hanson qualified in two events, winning the shot put (33 feet, 1 inch) and finishing fourth in the discus (98 feet, 7 inches), while Zaylee Bravo also made it in the discus, finishing fifth (98 feet).

Ella Marvin was a pole vault qualifier, finishing fourth (8 feet, 6 inches), and Anika Plowman finished sixth in the long jump (14 feet, 10 inches) to advance to state.

Two of Rainier’s relays made it as well, with both the 4x200-meter relay and the 4x400 finishing sixth.

The 4x200 ran a 1:57.26 with Aubrey Hancock, Emma Mathson, Plowman and Angelica Askey, and the 4x400 ran 4:47.09 with the same group.
