The cost to get hitched in Thurston County is about to go up.
On July 27, a newly approved $100 state surcharge will go into effect for all marriage licenses in the county, increasing the total cost from $72 to $172.
The last day to apply under the current fee is Friday, July 25.
“This is a significant fee increase,” said Mary Hall, Thurston County auditor, in a news release. “We want to make sure couples who are getting married soon know they can save money by applying early.”
Marriage licenses issued by the Thurston County Auditor’s Office are valid for 60 days and can be used for ceremonies that take place anywhere in Washington state. According to the release, couples getting married on or before September 23, 2025, can qualify for the lower fee if they obtain their license before the new surcharge takes effect.
The $100 surcharge was established by recent legislation to support a statewide co-responder program that pairs law enforcement with mental health professionals to respond to domestic violence incidents.
