Line Roy’s hard work in growing the city’s planned events in 2022-23 from two to 49, and efforts in expanding the city’s reach online has paid off as the communication and recreation coordinator was named the City of Yelm’s 2023 employee of the year.

Different City department directors, Mayor Joe DePinto and City Administrator Todd Stancil voted on the honor. The award was officially announced on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at a Yelm City Council meeting.

“(Line’s) work ethic, endless energy and ideas has made Yelm a better place to live and work,” Stancil said at the meeting. “Thank you, Line, for everything you have given to the City of Yelm.”

While serving as communications and recreation coordinator, Roy expanded the reach of three city-run Facebook pages. As well, the City of Yelm Government Facebook page had 25,000 total visitors and reached 193,000 total viewers in 2023.

The Parks and Recreation Facebook page was created in the early days of summer in 2023 and grew to over 1,000 active followers. The page saw 10,000 visitors and reached 39,000 viewers in 2023 under Roy’s control.

Roy also manages the City of Yelm Police Department page, which added over 1,400 followers in 2023. The page had 34,000 visitors in 2023 and reached an additional 239,000 viewers.

“(Line) quickly transformed the position to what you see today. She’s elevated the expectations of the position beyond our imagination,” Stancil said. “From a communications standpoint, Line has dramatically increased transparent communication, both internally and externally, using a variety of communication methods. For the recreation side of the position, as if that wasn’t already enough, Line coordinated 49 recreational events in 2023 with over 2,000 participating. In addition, Line obtained over 30 sponsorships to support these activities. 2024 will be another active year with multiple recreation opportunities, as well as a significant 100-year celebration that Line is working diligently on.”
