If you and I have ever met, you know that I love my community. I love how Yelm (and the areas that surround it) is full of kind, generous, hardworking people. I love the businesses in it, how they are supportive of the organizations asking for donations, sponsorships, space to hold celebrations, and so much more. I love the parks, the ducks that waddle through Cochrane Park, the baseball fields that bring athletes home at Longmire Park, and the splash pad that welcomes the squeals of the littlest Yelmites at Yelm City Park. And I love the events that happen in Yelm, like Prairie Days, which has been rebuilding for the past couple of years; Jazz in the Park, which has brought live entertainment; and the Nisqually Valley BBQ Rally, which has quickly become the best event in Yelm. I love these events.
But that’s not enough. It’s not enough to love the community I live in. It’s not even enough to love it and want to see it improve. There’s one more step: We have to do the work.
Yelm has no shortage of organizations, committees, and groups that need your support to continue making this community an amazing place. We need people with big hearts, big voices, and big ideas. We need people who work best behind the scenes, in front of crowds, in front of a microphone, and next to their neighbors. We need people who are organized, people who are cluttered, people who are artistic, and people who are good with numbers. We need people. We need you.
Find the things you want to change and then do the work to change them. Find the people you want to help and then do the work to help them.
It’s not enough to love your community. There’s one more step. You can take it.
