Kyler Ronquillo Commits to Play Football at Portland State University

Kyler Ronquillo, Yelm’s swiss army knife wide receiver and defensive back, committed to Portland State University during an official visit to the university.

The Vikings extended an offer to Ronquillo on Dec. 1 and the versatile athlete made his commitment on July 20.

Portland State University’s football program is a division one team in the Big Sky Conference, which features other schools from Montana, Idaho and Washington, among other states.

“I had a great talk with the head coach and it just seems like a great spot for me,” Ronquillo said about his visit to Portland. “Some of the guys on their team that I met remind me of the guys that I hang out with now and I instantly felt welcomed.”

During his visit, Ronquillo was able to observe practice and seven on seven drills, as well as put on a uniform for a photoshoot. Throughout his official visit, Ronquillo had the chance to familiarize himself with his future teammates.

He said a big reason the commitment was so easy is because the athletes he got to know carry a “similar mindset.” Ronquillo also said he loves the culture and energy the program presents.

Ronquillo said he will join the Portland State roster for the 2023-24 season as a wide receiver and potential special teams contributor. During his junior year as a Tornado, Ronquillo caught 69 catches for 775 yards and scored six touchdowns. Yelm maximized Ronquillo’s offensive abilities through the run game and special teams too, as he finished the season with 1,190 all-purpose yards.

The incoming senior at Yelm High School said he will be primarily used on offense during his freshman and sophomore seasons at Portland State. Ronquillo said there was chatter during his visit of him potentially playing the nickel role on defense as a junior and senior.

Defensively as a junior, Ronquillo finished the season with four interceptions — one for a touchdown — and 41 tackles.

Ronquillo said he felt nervous as he neared his commitment, but the decision eventually became an easy one for him.

“Going into my official visit, I knew Portland State wanted me and had a desire for me to join their program, so why not go to the place that wants me the most?” Ronquillo asked. “I’m super happy with my decision and it feels like weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”

With his commitment, Ronquillo said he will no longer “waste energy” stressing about his next chapter, which will allow him to turn his focus to his upcoming senior season in Yelm.

Ronquillo isn’t the only Yelm Tornado football player who is wanted by Portland State University, as incoming senior Ray Wright also received an offer from the Vikings. Ronquillo said he’ll work toward recruiting his current Tornado teammate to join him down in Portland.

With his decision on where to go after high school behind him, Ronquillo now has his sights set on what’s to come next year.

“Our program is full of monsters,” Ronquillo said of the Yelm football team. “Everyone is putting in work 24/7. There’s always grinders working to get better. We’re going to have a huge season and we’re going to put Yelm on the map.”

The incoming senior’s accolades include South Sound Conference MVP, SSC Offensive MVP, multiple All-Area selections and All-State honors.

The Tornados will kick off their 2022 season at 7 p.m. against Camas High School on Friday, Sept. 2, at Yelm High School.
