In a dogfight in the first round of the 2B District 4, the Rainier boys basketball team needed every bit of every minute to pull out a win in Montesano Saturday night against Ocosta.

The Mountaineers took the Wildcats all the way down to the wire, and Josh Meldrum hit the game-winner runner in the lane, splitting two defenders before the soft finish to help propel Rainier to a 64-62 win.

The win sets the Mountaineers up with Morton-White Pass in Chehalis on Wednesday for the district quarterfinals.

“In a game of runs and momentum swings we had just enough in the end,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “One thing about this team, they continue to show tremendous grit and toughness. Our competitive spirit is what won us this game.”

Josh Meldrum finished with a game-high 23 points, and his brother, Jake, added another 19 for the Mountaineers. Jimmy Meldrum was the only other Mountaineer in double figures with 12 points in the first round victory.

The Wildcats were led by the scoring efforts of Josh Figueroa and Xander Prigmore, who scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.
