Is a vacation to Europe on your bucket list, but you can’t quite make it there? Or have you ever wondered what it’s like to experience the pure bliss of live jazz music in a French park?
If you answered yes, then you’re in luck, because Jazz in the Park is set to return to Yelm City Park on Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6 for its fifth annual event.
The purpose of the event is for attendees to gather with their community, relax at the park and listen to live music, said Marian Licxandru, the organizer of Jazz in the Park.
Licxandru said the event will feature food vendors so those in attendance can sit and relax, while enjoying good food and music.
Steele Barrel Barbecue, Stack 571 Burgers, and El Taco Amigo will sell their mouth watering products at the event.
Licxandru, who is from Romania, moved to Yelm in 2011. He and his wife later opened the Pizzeria La Gitana restaurant in Yelm and began to offer live jazz music on Saturdays on their outdoor patio.
Licxandru wanted to bring jazz to Yelm on a larger scale than the Saturday gatherings at Pizzeria La Gitana, which sparked the idea of Jazz in the Park.
“When I lived in Europe, I used to travel everywhere. The nicest memory that resonated to my heart was when I was at a live jazz concert at a park. People were just sitting on the grass and enjoying it with their loved ones,” Licxandru said. “It was such a beautiful moment and one you will remember for your whole life.”
Licxandru is more than happy to bring a “taste of Europe” to Yelm for a weekend.
“We usually have a good turnout because it’s a different type of event. It’ll only be food vendors and music, creating a great setting,” Licxandru said. “We’re expecting people to come in and lay their blankets down, enjoy the ambience. This is our dream, to be able to provide a fun, relaxing weekend for the residents.”
Licxandru and those involved in organizing the annual event are thankful for all of their sponsors, especially Today’s Dental Center in Yelm. He said they’ve been the biggest supporter of Jazz in the Park since the first annual event.
He also encouraged people to come to the park even if they don’t like jazz.
“Jazz might not be for everybody but the purpose of this event is to get out with your community and relax and enjoy the ambience, just like we did in Italy,” he said.
The family-friendly event will run from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5 and from 5 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.
