Washington was one of five states throughout the United States, including Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Virginia, to hold a primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 4, and initial results show Congressional incumbents Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Marilyn Strickland and Thurston County commissioner challenger Nicolas Martinez-Dunning leading the top local races.
The top two candidates in each primary race will move on to the general election after the primary is certified.
Additional vote tallies will be announced in the coming days as eligible mail-in ballots arrive and last-minute votes are collected from drop boxes.
Here in Thurston County, there are 215,385 total registered voters countywide and, according to thurstoncountywa.gov, a total of 86,342 ballots have been turned in for a voter turnout of 40%.

Congressional District No. 3, U.S. Representative
Incumbent Marie Glusenkamp Perez, D-Skamania, trails challenger Sen. John Braun in the race for Congressional District No. 3, U.S. Representative as initial primary election results began to pour in. She reeled in a total of 77,503 votes, or 36.45%, while Braun, R-Centralia, earned 84,225 total votes, or 39.61%.
Brent Hennrich is in third place in the race in the Third Congressional District, earning 35,555 total votes or 16.72%.
Thurston County Commissioner, District No. 5
Challenger Nicolas Martinez-Dunning led as initial election results in the race for District 5 Thurston County Commissioner began to pour in.
He reeled in 5,444 total votes, or 38.86%, while incumbent Emily Clouse tallied 4,896 votes, or 34.74%.
Michelle Gipson, in third place in the race, earned a total of 3,513 votes, or 24.93%.
