In Loving Memory of Barry R. Bridges: 1935-2021

 Barry R. Bridges passed away the evening of Aug. 28, 2021, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington, with his daughter by his side. 

Born Oct. 16, 1935, in Long Beach, California, to Wayne and Gladys Bridges, Barry had one sibling, Carol Lee Coy. In July of 1961, Barry married his wife Gaye in Fairbanks, Alaska and adopted her two young sons, Walter and Scott. In October 1962, their daughter, Tracey was born in Norwalk, California. 

Barry started working at the young age of 9 with two paper routes. He bought his first truck at age 16 and started hauling tomatoes in the southern California area. He was an independent trucker in California until he left for Alaska in the 1950s to seek construction work. In 1975, Barry met Doug Bloom in North Pole, Alaska where they were both employed by the same construction company. Their 26-year partnership commenced in Anchorage, and 1989 brought them to Rainier, Washington where they partnered in Rainier General Development until Barry retired in 2005. 

Barry is survived by his wife Gaye; sons Walter (Carol), Scott (Leesa), and daughter, Tracey Kautz (Bob); grandchildren Samantha (John-David), Barry, Karlee, Hunter (Sierra), and Grace (Steve); great-grandchildren Julian, Tennyson, Alanna, Emmeline, Franklyn, Theo, Bowie, Remy, Blaze, Silas and Leon; niece Kim Coy (Al); and nephews Rick Coy (Avis), and Rob Coy. 

Barry was preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Gladys Bridges, sister Carol Coy, and grandson Casey. 

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2 p.m. at the Rainier Sportsman’s Club in Rainier, Washington. 

In lieu of flowers, the family’s charities are St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Providence S.W. Foundation, Olympia, Washington.
