Daytime travelers can expect heavy congestion on Interstate 5 in South Thurston County for lane closures later this month and in June.
Washington state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews will close two lanes along portions of I-5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates, starting with southbound I-5 in May and northbound in June:
• Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13, in Maytown
• Monday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 20, near the Lewis County line
• Monday, June 2 and Tuesday, June 3, at the Scatter Creek Rest Area
• Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10, north of the Scatter Creek Rest Area
During each workday, a 2-mile section of I-5 will be reduced to a single lane.
The lane closures allow crews to fill gaps in the surface of the roadway and fix potholes. Crews need warm and dry conditions to perform the repairs. Once complete, the repairs will help reduce the rate of deterioration on the roadway, according to a WSDOT news release.
WSDOT encourages travelers to consider rescheduling discretionary trips, travel early in the morning or late afternoon and add an hour of extra time if travel during work hours is necessary.
