For the second consecutive season, Graham-Kapowsin’s football team got the better of the Yelm Tornados in a South Puget Sound League matchup.
On Thursday, Oct. 2, the Eagles executed on all cylinders on offense, defense and special teams to defeat the Yelm Tornados 39-0. Graham-Kapowsin accumulated 395 total offensive yards behind the passing of sophomore quarterback AJ Tuivaiave and the rushing of senior Blake Pearson.
The Tornados and Eagles remained tied 0-0 after one quarter of play, before Pearson found the endzone on a one-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. Before the second quarter expired, the sophomore quarterback, Tuivaiave, connected on an 11-yard touchdown with his wide receiver Keh’Ano Corpuz to go up 13-0 – after a blocked PAT.
Graham-Kapowsin’s defense opened up the second half with a two-point safety behind the swarming efforts of linebacker Gavin Deaton to go up 15-0. Later in the third quarter, Tuivaiave found his second touchdown of the game behind a one-yard rush. At the end of three quarters, G-K led 22-0.
The fourth quarter began with yet another G-K two-point safety, to go up 24-0, after Jeremiah Leumuava chased down Yelm’s running back, Hunter Owens, in his own endzone. Later in the quarter, Tuivaiave connected again with Corpuz for a 38-yard touchdown, pushing G-K’s lead to 31-0.
The final score of the contest was a 10-yard passing touchdown from GK’s backup quarterback, Kolton Wadley, to his receiver Lazarus Kinchen. Wadley successfully converted his team’s two-point try to go up 39-0.
Ultimately, Graham-Kapowsin defeated Yelm 39-0. The Eagles move to 5-0, 2-0 in SPSL action, while the Tornados move to 1-4, 0-2 in the SPSL.
