Yelm girls basketball has added two more wins to this season’s record, which has been perfect so far, and Rainier girls basketball has picked up another win of its own.
The Tornados trounced Shelton 68-11 on May 17 at home.
Yelm held Shelton to eight points in the first quarter and seven points in the second quarter, then went on to shut the team down in the second half, with only two points being scored by Shelton for the entire half, both in the third quarter. Yelm scored 18 points in the first quarter, 22 in both the second and third quarter and six points in the fourth quarter.
My’Kel Jones was the high point scorer for the game with 20 points, followed by Bayleigh Harder with 14 points, Morgan Whited with nine points and Lilli Williams with eight points. All girls on the roster scored during the game.
Yelm also beat North Thurston, tallying their 62-40 victory on May 21 at North Thurston.
The Tornados held North Thurston to six points in the first quarter, scoring 20 themselves. In the second quarter, the contest was more even, with the point differential being just one — Yelm scored 11 points and North Thurston scored 10. Yelm again pulled away in the third quarter with 19 points to North Thurston’s nine, but the latter rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 points to Yelm’s nine.
Harder was the high-point scorer for the game with 14 points, followed by Samantha Rohwedder with 10 points, Williams with nine points and Sadie Tanner also with nine points.
The Mountaineers lost their second game of the season to Wahkiakum 38-58, but picked up a win against Kalama 42-21.
In the May 18 game at Kalama, Rainier held the team to just four points in each of the first, second and third quarters, scoring 10, 13 and seven points in each, respectively. Kalama put up more of a fight in the fourth quarter, tallying nine points, but the Mountaineers scored 12 or their own.
The high-point scorer of the game was Selena Niemi with 12 points, followed by Brooklyn Swenson with 11 points, Janess Blackburn with seven points and Bryn Beckman with five points.
Rainier suffered a loss to Wahkiakum on May 22 in an away game.
The first two quarters were well matched, with Rainier scoring more in the first and Wahkiakum scoring more in the second. However, Wahkiakum pulled away in the third quarter with 23 points to Rainier’s nine, and then continued the trend in the fourth quarter, scoring five more points than the Mountaineers.
The high point scorer for the game was Beckman with 15 points, followed by Niemi with seven points, Isabella Holmes also with seven points and Kaeley Schultz with six points.
