The City of Yelm will hold a celebration to honor the 3A state football champions later this month in a joint celebration with Yelm Community Schools.

The celebration will start at 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23. It will begin with a police escort down “Tornado Alley” at 4:15 p.m. Spectators are welcome to line the sidewalks throughout campus to welcome the players or to take a seat in the stadium.

Yelm Community Schools Superintendent Brian Wharton is excited to celebrate the student athletes.

“The championship was a clear point of pride for our community. When the student athletes went to each school, there was clear pride that these kids are a product of Yelm,” Wharton said in reference to the football team’s visits to the elementary and middle schools in the district after their championship victory. “It is crystal clear that this community stands strongly behind the students. We are incredibly proud as a district and want to support the students with great passion.”

Leading up to the arrival of the football team, the band, cheer and dance teams will perform.

The championship football team is scheduled to arrive at the Yelm High School stadium at 4:30 p.m.

The celebration will include comments from the athletes, coaches and community leaders.

According to the City of Yelm’s Facebook post, there will also be an “exciting special announcement” during the ceremony.

The Tornados defeated the Eastside Catholic Crusaders, 20-13, on Saturday, Dec. 3 to secure the program’s first ever state championship title.
