Beavers Drop Tightly-Contested OT Game to Spartans

The Tenino boys soccer team was able to fight back from a goal down two separate times, but gave up a goal in the second overtime to fall to Forks at home, 3-2, Monday night.

It’s the Beavers third straight loss to Forks by one goal, and the Beavers’ second loss this season.

“I’m super proud of our effort, I’m frustrated though,” Beavers coach Kevin Schultz said. “We can’t quite get them.”

Forks got the scoring going in the 39th minute after a Jesus Garcia-Dominguez goal, helping the Spartans take a 1-0 lead into the half. 15 minutes into the second half, Tenino’s Max Craig finally broke through to tie it up in the 54th minute, scoring his first goal of the season off an assist from David Espinoza.

“David did a really good job of getting to the end line and sending a great cross,” Schultz said. “To finally send one in, when you see one go in, you start to score more, that’s huge for Max.”

But it wouldn’t last. In the 62nd, the Spartans were awarded a controversial penalty kick, and Ethan Bellos stepped up and drilled it to give the Spartans another lead.

The Beavers would equalize after a good cross from Espinoza in the 78th on an own goal from Forks, but then Garcia-Dominguez broke the deadlock in the second extra time period in the 88th minute in sudden death.

Starting several swing players due to a shorthanded roster, Schultz was proud of the kids that played Monday.

“We competed really hard, it was a very back and forth game, some parts of the game were physical, very back and forth and up and down,” Schultz said. “Really excited with how we battled, it's unfortunate that in the end, we didn’t quite make the plays we had to in overtime.”

The Beavers will take on Ilwaco on the road Wednesday in their next game.
