Worthy Coffee Co. in McKenna, which opened its doors on June 6, aims to establish a loving and friendly environment for its customers.
The business sells a variety of coffee and other drinks, as well as 16 flavors of ice cream.
Brandi Worthy, the owner of Worthy Coffee Co., has over 20 years of experience in the coffee industry. Being able to launch her own coffee shop is a dream Worthy had for many years and it finally became a reality in early June when her shop celebrated its grand opening.
“The vision that we have for Worthy Coffee Co. is to bring the people together. We want to form communities and relationships with everyone in the community and surrounding areas,” Worthy said. “This is a safe place for people to come if they feel overwhelmed or need a little escape. They can come in here to an atmosphere full of peace and love. We just want to love on people when they come in. It doesn’t matter where they come from or who they are.”
Worthy said it took only six days to fully move into the location and open. She came in with a vision and simply “got it done.” Prior to the shop’s official opening, Worthy said a higher power led her to launch the new venture.
“This wasn’t supposed to happen. We were going to do a mobile coffee shop and we still have that opened,” Worthy said. “I came here one day for a women’s event when the shop was ‘The Cupbearer’ and the owner said the Lord told her to sell the coffee shop to me. After a lot of prayer, we decided to see what the Lord has in store for us here. He said to prepare the atmosphere and the people will come.”
Just several weeks after opening in June, Worthy said the community’s reception to the shop has been outstanding, which has left her in awe. She has worked at a number of different coffee stands in Yelm and Worthy said moving into the McKenna and Roy area has been great.
“I didn’t have any expectations. I just felt I was being obedient and stepping out in faith. I didn’t know what the outcome would look like, I just knew I needed to do it,” Worthy said. “The support that we have is absolutely amazing and people have nothing but positive things to say about this, so I know the Lord is at work.”
Worthy Coffee Co. plans on becoming a staple in the community and began hosting events from the get-go. The shop plans to host markets from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on each Saturday in July.
“We’re going to have a full calendar of events every single month. There’s always going to be something new and different, but also inviting to the community. It’ll always be kid-friendly, too,” Worthy said. “We’re going to have all kinds of events all throughout the day, including after hours. We also rent out our space after hours, too, if anybody has something they want to do.”
The business gets its coffee from Fulcrum Coffee in Seattle. Worthy said they carry a medium dark roast so it “appeases to everyone’s pallet.” The ice cream is Cascade Glacier brand and is made locally in Oregon. Among their offerings are two non-dairy flavors and “at least” one nonfat and sugar free flavor. The store also offers affogato, a variety of floats, and different specials involving ice cream.
“When I started doing coffee, I stopped and did other jobs in between, but always kept coming back to coffee,” Worthy said. “I have this passion for it and it’s been my favorite job I’ve ever done being a barista. I love coffee itself and I love people. It’s my happy place. I’m bringing a couple of my happy places together in my shop.”
Worthy’s daughter Presly Littlejohn, an employee at Worthy Coffee Co., said it has been their dream to work together.
“I’ve always had the best relationship with my mom, and working with her and doing something she has always talked to me about since I was a kid is a dream come true,” Littlejohn said. “I am incredibly proud and happy for her, and happy to be a part of it.”
Worthy described her staff as wonderful, and said each of the employees have a background in the coffee industry.
“Our staff here is very knowledgeable. We’re such a tight-knit little family,” Worthy said. “When you come in here and get a coffee from any one of us girls, they’re all going to taste the same.”
In addition to the shop’s Saturday Market, they will host “sit and knit” sessions from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 6, July 13, July 20, and July 27. Worthy Coffee Co. will also host its “young adults ice cream social” from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 10.
Along with the other offerings, the shop will offer a “free flowing bible study” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on July 6, July 14 and July 21. A sip and paint event is also set for 6 to 8 p.m. on July 17. There are 12 spots available and each one costs $50.
The business will host several live music events throughout the summer months and held its first event on Friday, June 23, titled “Coffee and Country Music.”
Worthy Coffee Co. is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Worthy said the business plans to eventually be open on Sundays as well.
