Local fitness trainer to host online ‘summer shred competition’

Jamie Hawley, a local fitness trainer in the Yelm and Rainier area, is helping residents transform their lifestyle this summer with her inaugural “summer shred competition.”

Participants have a chance to win a first-place grand prize of $1,000, while second place can win $500, and third place can earn $250. The competition starts on Monday, April 29, and runs for a month through May 29. Entry costs $100. If enough people get signed up, Hawley said she would additionally give away training and apparel.

The competition is not based on weight loss or any specific numbers. Each participant must submit a photo on April 29 before working for 30 days toward their goal, and then they must take an after photo on the final day of the competition. Hawley will support participants by posting daily workouts, nutrition tips, meal ideas, recovery and other tricks on her Facebook page.

She and two other trainers from out of state will choose the winners based on the progress made. The goal is up to the participant, as they can choose to add muscle, lose body fat or even gain confidence in their workouts. As of Tuesday, April 23, 20 people have signed up for the competition, which will be an annual event.

“The competition is to help get people motivated before summer as it starts getting nice out because a lot of people stop coming to the gym once the sun comes out,” Hawley said. “The idea is to try to get them moving on a routine before the summer hits. It should be fun.”
