Miss WA gets welcome home

Friends and family gathered at the Tahoma Valley Golf and Country Club Sunday afternoon to greet Janet Harding, the newly-crowned Miss Washington 2008.

As part of Miss Washington tradition, a homecoming party allowed Harding to meet and thank members of the community who supported her endeavors.

Guests dined on food catered by Chef Ricardo’s and lined up for autographs and to congratulate Harding on her win.

Television screens throughout the restaurant displayed slide shows of Harding’s adventures to become Miss Washington and a table was even set up where Harding autographed pictures.

Comments taken on county plan
Thurston County residents are invited to have their say in updating the county’s Hazardous Waste Plan.

The Thurston County Public Health and Social Services Department’s Environmental Health Division is updating the local plan.

The Washington Waste Management Act requires counties to have plans for managing hazardous materials produced by households and small businesses.

The last “Hazardous Waste Plan for Thurston County” was adopted in 1998, and is in need of revision.

To assist the county in this process, a stakeholder group is meeting monthly.
If you are interested in participating in this group as a citizen representative, or if you would like more information, call 360-754-4111 or visit www.co.thurston.wa.us/...ex.html

Residents may also visit the Web site to submit comments and questions.

Tacos Gaby opens at new location
Tacos Gaby reopened at its new location Friday.

Although a Mariachi band was in the plans originally, the owners were unable to find time to find and book a band.

“It’s been busy,” said José Méndez, son of the business owners.

Though plans for the band fell through, Méndez said the restaurant still plans to get a Mariachi band some day.

Bright signs in the color of the Mexican flag adorned the building days before the opening, announcing the date when they would be open for business.

The menu was expanded to make the restaurant feel less like a taqueria and more like a full service restaurant.

“We’re excited to get authentic tacos, real excited. Booya,” said customer Nate Pruitt.

Hundreds turn out for Saar’s job fair
Saar’s Market Place took another step in opening their Yelm store this month as management held a job fair last week.

The job fair, held on location, drew between 400 and 500 applicants, said John Hames, the store’s manager.

“It was just a great response,” Hames said.

“I’d say 95 percent of the applicants were from Yelm and they were just incredible, nice people.”

The line for interviews went from the upstairs office down the front stairs and out the front door, Hames said.

Follow-up interviews were expected to take place next week.

Management has yet to announce an opening date.

Hames said the store’s opening may be a matter of when the owner is able to obtain all the necessary permits, among them a liquor license.

Sex offenders living as transients
Thurston County Sheriff’s Office issued notifications last week that two sex offenders were released to the community.

Level II sex offenders Paul J. Arnold and Sean A. Sills, 39.

Arnold is a white male, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

On Nov. 7, 1997, Arnold pleaded guilty in Weakly County Circuit Court to one count of attempted rape.

Arnold was sentenced to eight years’ incarceration with credit for 83 days served.

The equivalent in Washington state law is attempted rape second degree.

The conviction stems from Arnold, at age 25, having nonconsensual sexual contact with a female who was intoxicated.

Sills is a white male, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

On Sept. 7, 1994, Sills was found guilty by bench trial of one count of first-degree child rape.

Sills was given an exceptional sentence and sentenced to 160 months’ confinement with credit for 133 days served.

He was also sentenced to two years of community supervision.

The conviction stems from Sills, at age 24, sexually assaulting a girl who was under age 2.

A general public notification occurs when an offender registers in Thurston County as a transient, meaning they have no set address.
